Mineral makeup on a budget
January 21st, 2009 by Trixie Reyna, Managing Editor
Are you one of those who are interested to try
mineral makeup but just find them too
expensive?

When a friend first introduced me to mineral
makeup a couple of years back, I immediately
got hooked; however, there are two drawbacks:
the brand I liked is only sold in the US and when
people who order in bulk abroad sell the
products here, they’re really expensive.

But who wouldn’t love mineral makeup? Not only
does it NOT irritate your skin—it supposedly
even improves it—it is also fun to apply and
comes in shades that blend well with your skin.
They last long, too.

Some known makeup brands have already,
thankfully, come up with their own mineral
makeup line, but if you still find them too
expensive, maybe you’ll find that Elegant Minerals is what suits you best. Read on to know
why.
Elegant Minerals is a mineral makeup brand from Texas, USA, now made available in the
Philippines exclusively by Posh and Glam. Unlike other mainstream mineral make-up brands,
Elegant Minerals reportedly uses only 100 percent mineral cosmetic ingredients such as
titanium dioxide, mica powder, and iron oxides. But the best part of all, really, is how they are
very affordable compared to other brands—without sacrificing quality.

For instance, the smallest jar (5g) of mineral makeup would only cost you Php290, while the
largest jar (30g) is only Php1,300. Currently, Posh and Glam offers twenty different colors of
Elegant Mineral foundation, over thirty mineral eye shadow shades, and more than ten
mineral blushes and bronzers.
And this is what I immediately noticed: each jar is really packed to the brim, unlike other
brands that come in bigger jars but are almost always only half-full. I learned that Elegant
Minerals jars are in fact filled by volume, because mineral makeup varies in weight. For
instance, foundation weighs differently from eye shadow, setting powders, and blush.
Elegant Minerals in 5, 10, and 20 gram variants come in jars filled all the way to the top, so
you don’t feel you are short-changed at all.
As for how it looks on your skin, rest assured they look natural and blend really well. I
found that the longer it stays on my skin, the more natural it looks—but I don’t mean it
begins to fade. In fact, since I’ve started using it, I never really needed to reapply my eye
shadow and blush; sometimes I’d just need to retouch the foundation on my T-zone
because that tends to get oily. I apply it every morning and it lasts all day!
It feels very light on skin, like I don’t even have makeup on. It’s great for those who like the
no-makeup look, as I do. It just gives your skin that soft, smooth, and moisturized finish,
making you look healthy and radiant. I also did not experience any allergic reactions or
breakouts. It supposedly doesn’t expire even, unless it’s exposed to heat and dust.

Since I have fair skin, I  got their foundation in Golden Wheat and rice powder in Neutral
Rice. I also opted for their Orchid blush, which gives me this natural flushed look that
brightens up my face. And since I’m all for neutral looks, I tried their eye shadow in Brown
Sugar, which adds drama and makes my peepers bigger without making it look like I even
had any eye makeup on.

Elegant Minerals also has brushes and sampler packages.
Elegant Minerals also offers natural bristle brushes to make application really easy and
even fun; you feel like you’re a professional when in fact you’re basically just swiping the
brush across your face and it does the job.

I have their handy baby kabuki (Php350), but they also have other brush options, such
as the concealer brush (Php300), eyeshadow brush (Php300), mini goat hair brush
(Php250), goat hair kabuki (Php800), goat hair mini blush (Php150), goat hair
retractable brush (Php890), kabuki badger hair (Php900), retractable lip brush
(Php400), and saber and goat hair brush (Php690). If you want to buy a complete set,
they offer a deluxe brush kit at Php1,750 or the 13-piece brush set at Php2,000.
If you’re just about to try mineral makeup, you’d do well to get their starter kits first.
Here are some sampler packages:

12-pc sample kit (P1,200): 12 pieces of mineral makeup shades of your choice on
sample jars (each containing ¼ teaspoon mmu)
5g of foundation rice powder, and setting powder (Php290)

10g of concealer, blusher, and eye shadow (Php600)
